Borgbackup compression method

After my article about backup with Borgbackup and the reference to Stefan’s article LZMA, ZLIB and LZ4 in comparison I got the hint via Mastodon that newer versions of Borgbackup (from 1.1.4) support compression with ZSTD and that this should make a difference.

I tested this with the following script and an exclude on /home/dirk/workspace/*/.git.

#!/bin/bash
set -o errexit
set -o nounset
set -o pipefailexport

BORG_PASSPHRASE=sheow0deighaigahgh1aiphoobohborg

init –encryption=repokey /ext/localbackup/borgnoneborg

create –compression none
–verbose
–stats
–progress
–exclude-caches
–exclude-from /home/dirk/borgtest.exclude
/ext/localbackup/borgnone::test /home/dirk/nextcloudfor

i in lz4 zstd zlib lzma; do

borg init –encryption=repokey /ext/localbackup/borg${i}

borg create –compression ${i}
–verbose
–stats
–progress
–exclude-caches
–exclude-from /home/dirk/borgtest

.

exclude
/ext/localbackup/borg${i}::test /home/dirk/nextcloud

borg init –encryption=repokey /ext/localbackup/borg${i}auto

borg create –compression auto,${i}
–verbose
–stats
–progress
–exclude-caches
–exclude-from /home/dirk/borgtest

.

exclude
/ext/localbackup/borg${i}auto::test /home/dirk/nextclouddone

My workspace directory is just under 11 GB and contains a few scripts and otherwise git repositories

.

In the table of results shown below you will find in the first column Compression the compression method, in the Time column the runtime in seconds, the Compressed column contains the compressed data volume and in the Deduplicated column what is left of it after deduplication, Ratio is the value of Deduplicated divided by the size of the original data (the smaller the better).

Findings

:

  • There is no way around an initial test with your own data. My sample data contains relatively many binary data, which cannot be compressed well.
  • The additional parameter “auto” has a massive influence on the runtime with the potentially better compression methods, without having to worry about the size.
  • I tend to switch from lz4 to auto,zstd, but would like to back this up with more tests.
  • A look at the output of the borg help compression command is worthwhile in any case.
